Name is misspelling of Malay word "beras basah" (wet rice). There was a river here (Stamford Canal). Cargo-loads of rice were dried along banks but regularly got wet by rising tide. Source: Infopedia
That glass roof sure is pretty when it rains and you're looking up at it. Useful too, as I changed my mind and decided to head for another station with more shelter.

The station is the 'Deepest' station in the MRT system at 35 metres below ground and its islandplatform is located at level B5. It is also the station with the longest escalator, at 41.3 metres.
