I stayed here early spring, hotel is fine, fit for purpose, high tea in the afternoon is good after a long hike and the view is great. Pricey place though.

High tea or rather afternoon tea is pleasant but could be improved with some less 'rich' or cream based fare. All cakes and desserts were similar in base. Dorchester tea fantastic

An old fashioned hotel- quaint with high tea and a fire in the lounge to warm you up after tramping in the park

Well, the location is wonderful of course, so is the actual building, but it's very dated inside. It's my honeymoon. I'm upset :-(

The rooms in the Tongariro wing are newer and nicer. Dinner in the Ruapehu Room is fantastic

Be aware they add 1.5% if you use a credit card. They will also offer you to pay in your currency, as though it was a favour to you, but they then take a transaction percentage.

The hotel looks fancy on the outside, but the rooms are old and run down. Not what you would expect in a castle. Dinner at the Pihanga restaurant was also disappointing.

Ever seen the movie The Grand Hotel Budapest? It could've been shot here. Spent two nights here. Loved it. Staff wonderful, rooms gorgeous. Region around is other worldly.

A little bit of the grandeur of the good old days. I just wish they would air the rooms better. And, for goodness sake, at this price the wi-fi should be complimentary!
