The Getty Center in Brentwood has an impressive collection of works from as early as before the 20th century. You'll find Van Gogh's Irises here, and also don't miss the huge Central Garden. Free.

The museum is free EVERY DAY. You only pay for parking. Take a bus, and the entire day at the Getty is free.
Leave the venue a little (15mins) early on one of their event nights. This way the tram line back to your car isn't nearly as long.

A great way to spend the day. Have a cozy picnic on the lawn, take amazing photos of surrounding city and/or architecture, and walk through the galleries to explore the many pieces on display.
During the winter months you can see the most magnificent sunsets at closing time
The weekends are predictably crowded and parking can get tricky. Aside from that, the Getty is quite stunning, inside and out.

Amazing art, but if you like European history, head over to the furnishing exhibits. Tapestries and furniture from Lois XIV castle and more!! Amazing!!!!
The Getty has beautiful gardens so forgo the expensive cafeteria food and bring a picnic so you can truly enjoy the beautiful landscaping. (and it's a great cheap date!)

Come for the scenic views, Richard Meier architecture, and sculpture garden. The art collection is mediocre, but admission is free.
The best museum I have ever been to, and I've been to a lot of museums. It has great views from up above, the gardens are beautiful, the building is crazy, and the art collection is fantastic.
