- One of the UES's cooler, more hipster bars. Great cocktails, even better brunch (love the fried chicken & waffles!). Typical faux vintage-y Williamsburg-esque decor.
- 7th.ListJuni 26, 2012The Upper East Side. Ruairi Curtin. Irish Gastropub. Try - Spiced beef sandwich (cured for 40 days, spiced in house for four days, then slow roasted for six hours). Cocktails made with Irish whiskey. Mehr erfahren
- EaterSeptember 13, 2017The Penrose on East 82nd represents a welcome reprieve from that neighborhood's sports bars. Go for the smoked meat sandwich, made with 40-day-cured brisket that's been slathered with mustard. Mehr erfahren
- FaithJuni 15, 2017The soft shell crab sandwich was so yummy and crispy! Definitely get the buffalo Brussel sprouts for a shareable plate especially since mains don't come with sides. It was delicious!!'
- Fun place to meet up with friends after work for dinner and/or drinks! Their apps are delicious, particularly the mac & cheese and the mussels.
- Charlotte JaneNovember 30, 2017Where you bring your friends from out of town to convince them that UES is vaguely cool. Brunch is great, and the cocktails are varied and well crafted. Gets crowded and loud on weekend nights.
- Nick AtkinsonMai 12, 2017When you look in through the door, don't stop there. Go right in, it's a lot bigger than it looks. What a great vibe and atmosphere. The fish tacos were excellent with Valentina Mexican Hot Sauce
- Rob JacksonSeptember 24, 2012Unusually cool downtown vibe on the Upper East at The Penrose! Awesome bartenders, unique (and delicious) cocktails. Great interior design. Great with friends or a date.
- Finally, a proper mixology gastropub in the UES. While close to the 2nd ave douchebars, it seems to be a haven for what passes for a hipster on the UES. The fried oyster sliders are great.
- The beer list and cocktails were great! Not fond of the crowdedness w/ little standing room options (small columns w/ even smaller shelves to rest one's drink), but the friendly staff makes up for it.
- Andrew COktober 22, 2018Pretty solid brunch restaurant with classic and new-ish style foods... long wait for table, or just sit at bar quick!!! Plenty of great cocktails and craft beer options
- A LazDezember 25, 2016Had the breakfast burrito with a black coffee! Fantastic boost after long park walks! The place has nice service, atmosphere and music !
- Alice KimDezember 19, 2012Found one of the better burgers in NY. Better than those of Shke Shk or Brgr Jt! Fries are awesome as well. Great cocktails, extensive beer list, downtown vibe in uptown! Can't wait to go back.
- Marie La RueMärz 23, 2019Yorkville 20-something singles scene. Super busy neighbourhood pub. Above average bar food at affordable prices. Fish tacos and shishito peppers were quite tasty.
- Bryant BalatbatApril 20, 2015Great atmosphere. The Penrose Burger has a flavorful blend, complemented well with the potato bun. Does not come a side. The large fries though is more than enough for two people.
- Greg MacDonaldMärz 4, 2019Love the vibe, the service and the food. The French toast sticks at brunch are not to be missed!!
- Great selection of beer on tap and scotch on shelf...oh and there's a killer burger to help you get through that next round. Check the back bar for current craft beer offerings.
- Abbie WMai 14, 2014TT: Soda spikes are the daily draw, from 4 to 7 p.m., at this UES staple: Your choice of sprit plus root beer, tonic, grapefruit soda or ginger beer, all house-made, for $7. Draught beers $5, wines $6
- Corey PasseroAugust 21, 2017bro-duechy scene at night but fine cocktails and a really good food menu. highly recommend the deep fried pickles as well as the pat lafreda burger
- Maire GriffinOktober 22, 2013Adorable and a delicious brunch to boot. The chicken & waffles were yum and the egg in tomato tasty. Strong coffee = happy Sunday mornings (look for the old timey typewriters)
- Vilje LMai 14, 2017This place is so awesome! It has a cool downtown vibe in a great UES location. Must visit!
- Sherry WangOktober 27, 2014Come on Sundays for live music! Old pal spencer is my favorite cocktail (kinda like a boulevardier), and the dirty pickle martini is solid too. Murphy's stout is A+.
- Brendan ClancyJuly 28, 2012Another loud filament light bulb filled gastropub employing the failsafe method to young professionals wallets of fried pickles, artisanal drinks, mac and cheese and tiles. Tear for Ship of Fools...
- Kaitlin AhernJanuar 18, 2020Great cocktails, especially the old fashioned. Gets a little fratty later at night, though.
- Oscar SdZJuly 9, 2017The Penrose medium done with caramelized onions will be the best burger you ever had.
- Great atmosphere with an excellent playlist. Crowd is young and fun, and the drinks are decently priced! If you like a good beer selection, come here.. Definitely will be back!
- Todd HamiltonNovember 10, 2015They've done a very good job renovating the old Ship of Fools space. We had a private event in the back room and the space worked perfectly.
- Bitches Who BrunchOktober 15, 2015The Bitches say: B-. We love the décor at the Penrose and it’s a great vibe for brunch. The food is pretty good, but nothing remarkable, however, and the service was hit-or-miss. Mehr erfahren
- James VillaJuly 1, 2014Always have good beers on tap. Try their juicy burger! Good from the bun to the tender tasty core of the meat. Crispy fries also
- AngelaAugust 8, 2016Great, reasonably priced food! Atmosphere is cozy yet refined. Try the avocado toast or Fried Oyster sandwich for brunch.
- eFlirt ExpertOktober 2, 2013Adorable date spot! Lots of opportunities for great body language with the different seating arrangement options.
- Jon hoffmanJuly 9, 2012feels wonderfully out of place on the upper east side. fried pickles. yum. also, spiced meat sandwich. also, beer.
- Juliet ObodoAugust 25, 2012Try to come early btw 7-9 to get a table. Recommend the Mac N Cheese, the oyster sliders and the yummy spiked lemonade.
- BaturalpMai 11, 2019They have decent cocktails but it can get super busy during weekend nights. Good for singles.
- Mules and Bucks and Dirty Pickle Martini cocktails are great! So are the Oyster Sliders and the burger.
- Kevin CabralJuly 28, 2013It's the epitome of post-bubble yuppie retro cliché chic but the food is actually quite good, reasonably priced and a bottomless cup of coffee (without any fair trade accoutrement) costs $3. Why not?
- Meg FarmerNovember 30, 2015Shockingly cool place on the UES. Totally feels like you're downtown. Equally good for a first date or meet up with friends.
- Edgar CastilloJuni 30, 2017Great atmosphere, drinks were delicious. Fun space, will definitely try to make this place a new regular spot.
- Bre TempestaAugust 19, 2018Went for brunch, the chimichanga was amazing. Definitely would recommend.
- Stephanie CesearMärz 10, 2015Everything is great, food and drinks! Sometimes they have live music and it's even better. Great casual date spot.
- Polina WeitzOktober 8, 2017Came for a Sunday brunch. The French toast sticks were great. The avocado toast was solid, but I've had better. There is no soy milk, or a proper coffee machine, so I couldn't drink my coffee.
- CompassJuly 31, 2013Though the burgers and fried sausages are excellent at this upscale Irish pub, Penrose carries rare and unknown whiskeys, and turns them into savory cocktails.
- Nicholas BeckJuly 17, 2013It's got that old-timey decor that's so popular with establishments across the river these days in a gigantic space that houses two long bars and three separate dining rooms.
- Devon LawrenceDezember 24, 2015This is a quality daily of bars. Like their sister spot in WV, Wilfie and Nell, this place has quality drinks and solid food.
- Get an Old Fashioned with Bullet Eye Whiskey and make sure the orange peel is burnt at the end. Crowd can be a bit pretentious and dominantly white but what do you expect from the UES?
- Spicy beef brunch dish is unique and flavorful. For lunch/dinner/bar fare try the soft shell crab sandwich...amazing!
- Margo MindnichAugust 16, 2014If you're ever wondering where to go in the UES, this is the spot. It's hidden behind 2nd Ave subway construction
- A VickieJanuar 4, 2014Great spot on the UES. Great cocktails and food. Had the burger and a wedge salad and I would come back for both again and again!
- suneelDezember 21, 2013if you're a douchebag and also appreciate well made drinks, this might be your place. places like this exist to keep your kind away from downtown.
- Alex FishOktober 5, 2015The cocktails are quite good. The adult root beer is the way to go, especially with rum!
